When I look at you I see myself undone... potential untapped brilliance undiscovered creativity unexplored vacuum sealed in the cellophane of childhood. When I look at you I see myself unveiled... impulses unedited words unscripted feelings unrestrained the stark honesty of an undiluted soul. I see the me I wish I was. The flesh and blood reflection of all my could-haves and would-haves and should-have-still. I see the me I wish I wasn't. The pint-sized mimic of all my fearfulness and mindlessness and my selfish will.
little mirror little me Be better than I am, Better than I could be. little mirror little me Like me, but so much more Extraordinary.
So here’s me, waxing poetic for National Poetry Writing Month.

This is beautiful! Obviously I don’t know your own personal meaning behind it, but it reminded me that I need to look at myself and become aware of all I can accomplish and push back the negative. I hope you keep writing such lovely works : )
April 12th, 2013 at 11:37 am
I love that you heard something personal to you. Thank you for sharing it with me!
I was considering my children and how they seem to reflect both the best and the worst of me, and yet somehow are their own. Also how I seem to do this for my parents. But there are mirrors everywhere in life!
April 12th, 2013 at 11:49 am
Hi, I actually left the comment about Firefly, I just forgot to log out of the other blog I was working on. It’s always great to find other fans out there, ain’t no power in the verse that can stop us!
April 12th, 2013 at 2:07 pm
Always good to find a fellow Browncoat!
April 12th, 2013 at 11:33 am
Love this, it makes me think of my niece who is going through an especially tough time.
April 12th, 2013 at 11:49 am
It’s so hard to watch the people we love struggle. I’m always biting back the urge to swoop in and “fix” especially when the road they’re heading down is familiar. Not sure where your niece is at, but praying she finds her way… that all of us do.
April 12th, 2013 at 12:04 pm

April 13th, 2013 at 1:11 am
you’ve captured so sweetly our parental instinct, to teach, to shelter and the hope they inherit our better genes. a beautiful poem.
my 13 year old daughter has embraced her creativity, her slightly olive skin but is not quite sure about the little bump emerging on her classic Roman nose. hopefully, time might persuade her to beieve less in her mirror and a more in daddy’s sometimes wisdom.
congratulations, these words deserved a wider audience.
April 13th, 2013 at 9:24 am
Beautifully said! My almost 11 year old is the one who can’t see her own beauty these days and it’s killing me. She’s such a better version of me and so amazing. I’m trying to make her see it. These pre/early teen years are tough.
Thank you!

I love this poem, sometimes it’s so hard and other times so thrilling to watch our children experiencing life’s moments for the first time, especially when we see so much of ourselves in them.
April 13th, 2013 at 3:03 pm
Exactly! That’s just what I was trying to say!
April 13th, 2013 at 2:47 pm
So beautiful…Brought tears to my eyes. I so agree with you, there are mirrors of us everywhere and the children in our lives reflect us so strongly! I’ve actually had very similar thoughts, though not near as eloquent as your poem. =) Many congratulations on being FP… much deserved!!

I’m a mom to two mirrors and it’s very hard not to push them in the direction I want them to go, so they don’t make all my mistakes. I know that I have to let them spread their own wings and fly their own course and the only thing I can do is be the wind to guide them. As best as I can, I teach them the right things now and hope they make the right decisions later. Thank you for sharing this poem. It’s beautiful and I can absolutely relate.
April 14th, 2013 at 6:51 am
Well said. I think parenting involves a lot of faith, not just in God, but that what we’ve taught them is going to make a difference. Maybe that’s why most of us parents are such worriers. It was so much easier when I only had to worry about me.

April 20th, 2013 at 1:54 pm
I downright adore this and can’t pinpoint on exactly how or why but feel like I completely relate to it. Poetry is a very hard thing to do well without getting overly flowery or melodramatic, and this poem is just perfection.
April 22nd, 2013 at 11:15 am
Thank you so much! I worry that most of my poetry (and yes, poetry in general) is WAY too sappy and melodramatic (which is why most of it stays in my journal), so I really appreciate this comment!
April 22nd, 2013 at 10:01 pm
No, not sappy at all, especially because the poem rings very true. The few times I’ve tried poetry it was the hardest thing. It would either come out completely “this has been done” or I would just be too embarrassed to chance showing it to anyone. I admire anyone who can write really great poetry and make it work. And wee, that’s you!
April 21st, 2013 at 9:58 am
You’re a great poet! Keep on writing and inspiring other people. These are poems that I really love.

April 22nd, 2013 at 11:37 am
๐ You’re welcome, it just feels good to appreciate people who have the talent to tough other people’s lives. I’ve learned that in school, during my ‘practice teaching’ days. And the way my students smile at those simple words made me realize that people should be appreciated with the things they love to do. ๐ Have a great day!
