A swirl of bright colours and perfect faces;
cheap laughs and predictable drama,
where nobody knows your name.
I’m drawn in,
like a moth to its shiny doom.
Here there are no expectations,
no obligations,
no need to be or do or say the right thing.
Here is an easy void.
And I fall in,
barely noticing.
It’s so easy,
so comfortable to shift mind and body into neutral;
letting time wash over me like a lukewarm shower.
Hours down the drain,
with nothing to show for it.
Click, click, click… sigh.
There’s nothing on.
So here’s me, unapologetic TV and film buff,
but the first to admit that it’s 90% useless, pointless crap.
This is my Five Minute Friday contribution on lisajobaker.com for the topic: NOTHING. I must admit, that I went back and reformatted (totally against the rules), but after writing it, I realized it was more poem than prose.

This is beautiful. I love the comparison to a lukewarm shower. The perfect way to say the experience isn’t quite satisfying.

Exactly – neither as relaxing or as refreshing as we hope it’ll be. Thanks for the encouraging word!

Very nice…it’s easy to fall into the television trap. I usually don’t watch television but since I’ve been trapped (LOL) in a hospital for three weeks with three weeks to go, I’ve become a bed-potato (rather than a couch potato). I agree that television is 90% useless yet here I sit with the television on, visiting writers from 5 Minute Friday.
Glad that I stopped in to read you.

When there’s nowhere else to go, I think you get a pass to enjoy the oblivion for a time. 🙂 Six weeks is a long time to be trapped. I hope it goes as quickly as possible. Thanks for the follow!

I can relate. For the most part I’ve given up watching TV…except some news in the morning while on the treadmill, Grey’s Anatomy (I watch a week late on the iPad app) and some German cop shows (also on an iPad app to practice my German…)
Unfortunately I have found that Facebook can be just as bad of a time waster as channel surfing ever was…. New era, same traps!

True – I like to think its a bit more interactive, but not much. And it sucks my time away even quicker. There’s a few TV shows that are engaging and interesting and relaxing for me to watch, its the rest that I don’t really intend to watch. Netflix is great for us – no more flipping channels or getting sucked in, we watch intentionally or not at all most days. If I sit down with the remote in my hand, time to spend and no plan – total waste. Ditto for Facebook.
